  • One of the first photographs I bought on Etsy was a collection featuring a girl named Gisela Roesling, dated 1957. These photos seemed to capture various stages of her life. Inspired by them, I started experimenting with the concept of masking a portrait. What began as a metaphorical idea evolved into physically masking the portraits. In Self Portrait as Gisela Roesling, I covered Gisela’s mask in vivid green but used my own eyes beneath it. I often reflect on the different photographs I have and how they serve as masks, allowing me to see through others’ lives and explore identity. By using their faces to hide my own, I challenge my perception of my own authentic self.
