Grace Stevenson

Grace Stevenson is a painter living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). Her portraits explore the anonymity of identity through portraiture and the found image. Predominantly from 19th and 20th century collections, Grace’s work is inspired by found portrait photographs of anonymous individuals, which she collects from op shops, online stores, and markets. Although her work reveals a certain veracity, each subject is often covered by a vivid, alien-green mask. Her uncanny portraits create an alternate vision of portraiture, challenging the inauthenticity of the portrait as a representation of identity. The way Grace collects, references and re-presents photography in her artwork, offers the ability to question and reinvent the boundaries of understanding and representing identity.
